The Director (2025), by Daniel Kehlman, a celebrated young German-Austrian author, is an historical novel based on the life of G.W. Pabst (1885-1967), the early film director who was one of the most influential German filmmakers during the Weimar Republic. He fled to America but later returned to Nazi Germany. The novel speaks to the corrosive moral and intellectual compromises required to live under fascist tyranny: “When do compromises turn into full-blown capitulation? How many accommodations can someone make with evil before they themselves become part of the evil?” NPR review. (Stephen Colbert has selected the book for his Late Show Bookclub.)
