“The Boston Way” received the most votes and is the next book that we will read. The meeting will be March 10 at 3:00 in the Williams Room. I have one copy that members can borrow – please let me know if you are interested. It is also available to check out at the Sawyer Free Library, or you can buy it at The Bookstore of Gloucester, a lovely “brick-and-mortar” independent bookstore that is a block away from the UU Church.
“The Boston Way: Radicals Against Slavery & The Civil War” by Mark Kurlansky.
“A group of Boston abolitionists from 1820 to the Civil War passionately believe in non-violence. To use violence, such as a Civil War, to emancipate the slaves would fail to get black people their rights because it would not change the thinking of the slave owners. They predicted that it would take 100 years for Blacks to get their rights after a Civil War which has proven optimistic. Their nonviolent tactics laid the groundwork for the modern civil rights movement.”
