Beasts of the Sea (2025), by Iida Turpeinen, is an eloquent, impassioned historical novel that spans three centuries, and uses the demise of Steller’s sea cow— a gentle mammal hunted into extinction – to chart mankind’s history from arrogant explorer of nature to “as great a threat as an asteroid or flood” to other species. A tale that is at once intimate and sweeping about the tragic clash between man and nature. It is a highly acclaimed novel that has been translated from Finnish into 28 languages and into English by David Hackston. Selected as the official December 2025 book pick for the Colbert’s Late Show Book Club.
