Typical Order of Worship

  • Prelude (organ music; sometimes w/choir)
  • Introit (organ music; sometimes w/choir)
  • Opening Words (minister or guest speaker)
  • Opening Hymn (all sing – stand if able)
  • Affirmation (all read – stand if able)
  • Responsive Reading (minister reads, congregation responds)
  • Anthem (music; sometimes w/choir)
  • Announcements (brief sharing of information, joys, concerns)
    • Children leave for classes (during regular church year) — unless it is an Intergenerational Service
  • Offertory (music; collection is taken at this point in the service)
  • Reading (minister)
  • Hymn (all sing – stand if able)
  • Sermon or Homily (usually 20 minutes or less)
  • Pastoral Prayer (minister)
  • Choral Response (choir)
  • The Prayer of Jesus (all read)
  • Closing Hymn (all sing – stand if able)
  • Benediction (all read – stand if able)
  • Postlude (organ music; remain seated)
    • The Service Has Ended
